What Causes Mould In An Air Conditioner Unit?

Split system air conditioners offer the perfect environment for mould to thrive.

That’s because dust, dirt and pollutants accumulate inside them, they’re poorly-ventilated, very little light can make its way into the unit and moisture builds up inside.

 

3 Signs You’ve Got Mould In Your Air Conditioner

1. Unpleasant Smells

Regardless of whether your air conditioning is on or off, it shouldn’t be emitting any bad smells. In fact, it should be odourless.

So, if you’ve noticed a funky smell that is musty or earthy (which tends to get worse when the appliance is in use) then that could indicate that there’s mould present in your split system unit.

2. Unsightly black spots

If mould is spreading inside your air conditioning unit, you may be able to see dark-coloured mould spots near the opening (like in the picture below).

However, mould may be thriving inside your split system unit and may not be visible from the outside.

These spores will continue to expand if they’re left untreated, which is just one of many reasons to schedule regular air conditioning cleaning.

3. You’re getting sick regularly

The presence of mould inside damp buildings is thought to aggravate allergies and asthma and prompt wheezing, coughing, congestion and respiratory infections.

So, if you or a family member has been complaining of any of these issues or seems to have flu-like symptoms often, it is possible your air conditioner is mouldy and that it’s a contributing factor.
